As part of ALM’s “Southeast Takeaways” series published in the Daily Business Review and Daily Report, Marie Tomassi shared insight on the “very positive” outlook for law firms in 2022, noting Trenam’s significant uptick in business in 2021.
“We’re encouraged by the way the year has started, and we hope and expect it will continue,” Tomassi said. “I think it will be another great year.”
Following two associate pay raises in 2021, the firm is also including budgeting for more compensation increases in 2022 as it looks to remain flexible in the competitive talent market.
“Be flexible, agile and open minded,” Tomassi said. “We don’t know what’s coming next, and I think COVID was pretty good proof of that. You have to be able to respond to whatever, good or bad, arises, as quickly as possible, which really does require you to be flexible and remain aware.
Speaking specifically to the firm’s continued focus on attracting and retaining top legal talent, Tomassi added that strategies go beyond compensation. “The surveys have been showing that not just associates, but all people, are looking for more engagement, connection and meaning, and they want to know we care about them and will help them grow and develop in their career,” she said. “We think we do that well, and we want to continue to focus on that. If there are places where we can improve or augment, we’ll do that. At some point, these price wars are going to become unsustainable, I think.”
