Marie Tomassi lent her perspective to the Tampa Bay Business Journal for a May 22, 2020 feature on how Tampa law firms are handling recruiting during and following COVID-19.
“I think you’ll see a little less risk taking, unless (the candidate) fits a particular area that’s hard to place or has an expected boom coming,” Tomassi predicted.
She added that firms like Trenam will focus on bolstering areas that are likely to see a lot of work, most notably employment law and bankruptcy. “We think the restructuring and creditors’ rights and bankruptcy – variations on impact of the downturn in the economy will generate a lot of work,” she said. “In 2008, most of the creditors were going right into foreclosures. This time around, we anticipate much more interest in restructuring or alternatives to bankruptcy or foreclosure.”
For attorneys seeking a new job now, particularly those graduating law school, Tomassi suggested it might be more important to pursue the type of work that makes them passionate rather than eying practice areas that are likely to see a boom during the coronavirus fallout. “It’s not an easy situation we’re in, but compared to a 50-year career, a one- to two-year challenge is not as important as finding a niche that you love or finding the type of work that you’ll love doing at the right firm.”
