As the retail industry continues to weather economic challenges that pre-date the COVID-19 pandemic, Stephanie Lieb spoke with Chain Store Age for an August 25, 2020 article discussing the current landscape of bankruptcies in the sector and what to expect in the future.
While it could be expected for brick-and-mortar stores to have seen a massive spike in filings, outside factors have played a role in supporting businesses that would have otherwise suffered. “I thought there would be a lot more bankruptcies, but there really aren’t,” Lieb said. “Government assistance programs were so strong that retailers got PPP money and hung in. Forbearance agreements with landlords and banks also really intensified.”
